PATTERNS OF MEDICATION SUMMARIES

Basic information. Habit forming? No. Prescription needed? No (Yes). Available as generic? Yes (No).
Drug class: analgesic; anti-inflammatory (non-steroid); analgesic; fever reducer; sympathomimetic; diuretic; anti-hypertensive; antibiotic; stimulant; vasoconstrictor; bronchodilator; antispasmodic.
USE. Reduces pain, fever, inflammation. Relieves swelling, stiffness, joint pain of arthritis or rheumatism. Antiplatelet effect to reduce chances of heart attack and/or stroke. Controls seizures in treatment of some forms of epilepsy. Treatment for hyperacidity in the upper gastrointestinal tract, including the stomach and the esophagus. Symptoms may be heartburn or acid indigestion. Diseases include peptic ulcer, gastritis, esophagitis, hiatal hernia. Prevents narcolepsy (attacks of uncontrollable sleepiness). Controls hyperactivity in children under special circumstances. Treatment of mild to moderate pain and fever. Does not relieve redness, stiffness or swelling of joints or tissue inflammation. Decreases congestion of breathing passages. Suppresses allergic reactions. Lowers high blood pressure. Decreases fluid retention. Treatment of bacterial infections. Will not cure viral infections such as cold and flu. Treatment for drowsiness and fatigue (occasional use only). Reduces spasms of the digestive system, bladder and urethra. Dosage and usage information. How to take: Swallow with liquid or food to lessen stomach irritation. Follow package instructions. Swallow each dose whole with liquid; do not crush. Dissolve in water. Chew completely. Don’t swallow whole. Dissolve in the mouth before swallowing. Dissolve in small amount of liquid before swallowing.

What to do? Continue. Discontinue. Call the doctor when convenient. Call the doctor at the next visit. Call the doctor right away. Continue but call the doctor right away. Seek emergency treatment immediately. No action necessary.

Follow instructions on the package. Take a tablet every 6 hours and swallow with liquid. Take the medicine 3 or 4 times daily. Take the medicine at the same times each day. No more often than every 4 hours. Take at mealtime. Crumble a tablet and take with liquid or food to lessen stomach irritation. Take with food or milk to lessen side effects. Take right after a meal or with a bedtime snack. Swallow with liquid after slight meal. Swallow the medicine with a full glass of water. Dissolve the medication in liquid and  take with food to prevent stomach upset. Dissolve the medication in full glass of water and swallow. Take the medicine on an empty stomach  1 hour before or 2 hours after eating. Take the medicine on a full or empty stomach. Take the syrup without diluting. Don’t drink fluids immediately after the medicine. The medicine may be taken with or without food. To help the medicine reach your stomach faster and to prevent throat irritation, don’t lie down for 30 minutes after you take it.  Swallow each dose whole with liquid; don not crush. Dilute each dose with beverage before swallowing. Take with full glass of liquid. Mix with liquid. Chew well before swallowing. Chew or manually crumble each tablet. Take the medicine in addition to food high in calcium. Mix with liquid before swallowing. Don’t swallow dry. Swallow the prescribed dosage without diluting after each loose bowel movement. Usually 1 or 2 sprays into each nostril every 12 hours. Apply small amount of the ointment and rub in gently. Inhale 1 to 6 times. Remain seated while you inhale. Repeat dose in 5 minutes if needed. Don’t inhale the aerosol more than twice per dose. Drop medicine into the ear canal until the ear canal is full. Stay lying down for 2 minutes. Drop the eye drops into the pouch and close the eye. Don’t blink. Keep the eyes closed for 1 to 2 minutes. Rub the cream in thoroughly, but gently, to avoid irritation. Apply the cream 1 or more times daily. If you have a fair complexion, start with single application at bedtime. Apply a thin layer of the ointment to the affected skin. The ointment shouldn’t be used on the face. The medicine must be taken by injection under the skin. Use disposable sterile needles. Rotate injection sites. The medication may be given orally, rectally or by injection into a muscle. The medication should be given intravenously by the doctor. Inject the medication under the skin (subcutaneous) of the outer thigh or outer upper arm.
